Cancer Support

4 min read

Almost everyone will be affected by cancer at some point in their lives, whether through their own diagnosis or that of a partner, family member, friend or colleague. In the UK, around one in two people will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime, and every experience of it is different.

From noticing a worrying symptom and waiting for test results, to coping with treatment, supporting someone you love or grieving a loss, cancer can bring fear, uncertainty and a huge range of emotions. Having the right information and support at each stage can make a real difference, both practically and emotionally.

In this support hub, we explain what cancer is and the most common types, and bring together trusted resources in one place, including support for men, children, young adults and families, as well as bereavement support for anyone who has lost someone to cancer.

In January this year Macmillan Cancer Support stated that there are more than 182,000 new cancer cases every year for females, and around 193,000 new cancer cases every year for males.

Cancer occurs when cells change abnormally, they then divide and make other cells grow and multiply, this growth could be a tumour.

There are five main cancer groups, they are divided into groups according to the type of cell they start from. The five main cancer groups are carcinomas, lymphomas, leukaemia’s, brain tumours and sarcomas.

There are more than 200 different types of cancer. In the UK, the most common cancers are breast, lung, prostrate and bowl cancer.

Understanding what is really feels like to receive a cancer diagnosis can only really be described by someone who has experienced receiving a diagnosis.

Understanding what it is like to support someone close to you who has received a diagnosis can only really be described by someone who has experienced providing support for someone they love and care about.

Understanding what it is like to lose someone close to you through cancer can again only really be described by a person who has been through this type of loss.

Everyone will feel and navigate their own experience with cancer in their way, at times there will be relatability with others along the way and shared experiences, however everyone’s journey will be very personal to them.

Our Cancer support resource aims to provide helpful information and resources all in one place, which can be accessed 24/7 .
