The Fundamentals of Intra-Oral Scanning and Clinical Photography course is tailored for dental nurses aspiring to enhance their skills in taking intra-oral scans and capturing clinical photographs. All under the prescription of a registered dentist or clinical dental technician. You will cover the Health & Safety regulations which govern IOS and photography. You will be able to describe the principals of patient assessment. List the indications and limitations of the different software. Identification and use of equipment. To be able to take accurate intra oral photographs and scans.

Dental nurses trained in intra-oral scanning and clinical photography work directly with patients to capture accurate digital scans and clinical images under the prescription of a registered dentist or clinical dental technician. The role supports diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient communication, and complements the wider dental team by enhancing clinical records and digital workflows. This skill set sits as an extended duty for dental nurses, enabling greater involvement in patient care while working within defined clinical supervision and professional standards.

To enrol on the course, you must be GDC-registered, work in surgery, and hold appropriate indemnity insurance for extended duties. You will also need a GDC-registered dental professional who is able and willing to supervise and support you during your training.

How long is the course?

The course is delivered over 5 hours, with a total of 7 hours CPD when completion of the Record of Competence is included.

What is the course structure?

The course combines tutor-led teaching with a practical Record of Competence. The taught element covers health and safety, equipment use, patient assessment, software considerations, and how to take accurate intra-oral scans and clinical photographs.

Following this, you will complete a minimum of 5 intra-oral scans and 5 clinical photographs, record reflections via our e-portfolio, and have your work signed off by an in-house mentor.

When are the lessons?

Saturday mornings.

Is there an exam at the end of the course?

You will need to complete a minimum of 5 intra oral scans and 5 clinical photographs for your ROC and a 500-word essay.

What do I need to apply?

To enrol you must be a qualified GDC registered dental nurse working in a dental practice.
