World Wellbeing Week: Why Looking After Yourself Matters More Than Ever

25th Jun 2026

As we celebrate World Wellbeing Week (24-30 June), it’s the perfect opportunity to focus on something that often gets overlooked in the busy world of dentistry: our own health and wellbeing.

This year’s awareness week arrives during one of the hottest periods the UK has experienced in recent years. The Met Office has issued extreme heat warnings across large parts of the country, with temperatures forecast to reach 37–40°C in some areas and the UK Health Security Agency warning of increased health risks during prolonged periods of hot weather.

For dental professionals already working in fast-paced clinical environments, these conditions can make it even more challenging to stay comfortable, focused and energised throughout the day.

The Hidden Impact of Heat on Workplace Wellbeing

While most people associate wellbeing with mental health, physical factors play a huge role too. Research consistently shows that high temperatures can affect concentration, productivity, mood and fatigue levels.

The current heatwave is expected to bring not only high daytime temperatures but also “tropical nights”, where temperatures remain above 20°C overnight, reducing the body’s ability to recover properly through sleep.

For dental teams, this can mean:

  • Increased fatigue during clinical sessions
  • Reduced concentration and focus
  • Greater risk of dehydration
  • Increased stress and irritability
  • Poorer quality sleep between shifts

When combined with the physical demands of dentistry, these factors make prioritising wellbeing more important than ever.

Wellbeing in Dentistry: The Bigger Picture

The dental profession is no stranger to workplace pressures. Long hours, patient expectations, regulatory responsibilities and maintaining clinical precision can all contribute to stress.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), work-related stress, depression and anxiety remain among the leading causes of work-related ill health in the UK, accounting for millions of lost working days each year. Supporting wellbeing isn’t simply a “nice to have”, it’s essential for maintaining healthy, resilient teams.

At Cavity Dental Staff, we regularly speak with dental professionals who tell us that finding the right balance between work, personal life and self-care is one of their biggest challenges.

Simple Ways to Protect Your Wellbeing During Hot Weather

1 - Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can occur more quickly than many people realise, especially when moving between surgeries, reception areas and outdoor commutes.

Keep a refillable water bottle nearby and aim to drink regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until you feel thirsty.

2 - Take Meaningful Breaks

Even five minutes away from the surgery can help reduce physical and mental fatigue.

Step outside for fresh air where possible, stretch, or simply take a moment away from screens and clinical environments.

3 - Prioritise Sleep

With warmer nights making sleep more difficult, focus on creating a cooler sleeping environment by keeping bedrooms ventilated and limiting screen use before bed.

4 - Support Each Other

One of the greatest strengths within the dental profession is teamwork.

A simple check-in with a colleague, offering support during a busy day, or recognising someone’s hard work can have a significant positive impact on workplace wellbeing.

Creating Healthier Dental Workplaces

Wellbeing shouldn’t be something we only discuss during awareness weeks.

Creating a culture where people feel supported, valued and able to speak openly about challenges benefits everyone, from dental nurses and hygienists to dentists, reception teams and practice managers.

Practices that prioritise employee wellbeing often experience:

  • Higher staff retention
  • Improved team morale
  • Better patient experiences
  • Reduced absenteeism
  • Stronger workplace culture

At Cavity Dental Staff, we’re passionate about supporting dental professionals throughout their careers and helping practices build teams where people can thrive.

This World Wellbeing Week, Put Yourself on the Priority List

As temperatures rise across the UK and dental teams continue delivering exceptional care to patients, World Wellbeing Week serves as an important reminder:

You can’t pour from an empty cup. Whether it’s drinking more water, taking a proper lunch break, getting outside for fresh air or simply checking in with a colleague, small actions can make a big difference.

To all the dental professionals we work with every day, thank you for your dedication, compassion and hard work.

This week and every week, make your wellbeing a priority.
