“Take Action” – Mental Health Awareness Week

15th May 2026

Each year the Mental Health Awareness Week focuses on a theme, this year’s theme is “Take Action”

Cavity have seen this theme as an opportunity for us to look at the small but meaningful actions Dental Professionals / the Dental Team can take each day to help lift each other’s mood and better each other’s Mental Health & Wellbeing within the workplace.

For most of us, a large proportion of our time is spent at work and when we are happy at work we are likely to be happier in other areas of our life.

Taking Action can be as small as preparing yourself for the day ahead by having a nice lunch prepared. Preparing something you are looking forward to eating releases ‘happy hormones’, this can create a little spark of joy to your day and significantly boost your mood.

Staying mindful about your own self-care whilst in the process of being there and caring for others is important.

Dentistry is a caring profession, but we can all be subject to becoming compassion fatigued, self-care is a huge part of making sure we don’t burn ourselves out.

Small actions for yourself can include getting some fresh air in your day. Fresh air we know improves mood, reduces fatigue and improves concentration and along with some movement in your day such as stretching or a short walk on your break really can make a difference to how you think and feel.

Smile! Smiling at someone makes them feel seen, overall smiling can bring a warm feeling to yourself and the other person, it creates an unspoken connection.

Small Actions such as opening a door or holding a patient’s hand (with their consent) when they are feeling scared makes them supported.

Show that you are listening; eye contact, nodding, even turning down the radio in your surgery, these small actions show that you are fully engaged with that person.

Ultimately small, kind actions help boost our self-esteem, reduce stress and anxiety, increase happiness, and improve overall mood, positive feel good actions improves social connections which can promote a sense of trust and provides a sense of purpose.

All it takes is a small action to bring great benefits.

We took action here at Cavity by putting together a Health and Wellbeing Support Hub.

This is a hub of signposting links for various Health & Wellbeing related topics.

There are times when we all need support and times where taking action can feel difficult, here you can find information and guidance it all in one place and consider what is available to you I your own time and at your own pace.

Whether it is for yourself or you need the guidance in helping someone else.

Our goal her at Cavity was simple, we wanted to help simplify your search, so when you needed support, it was just a click away.
