Infertility

9th Oct 2025

Pineapples have become a powerful symbol for women struggling with infertility, hence a picture of a Pineapple has been selected for this resource, for many in the infertility community, the pineapple has become a symbol of hope and resilience

Around 1 in 7 couples may have difficulty conceiving, however for some despite having regular unprotected sex they cannot get pregnant which is also known as infertility. Infertility is usually only diagnosed when a couple have not managed to conceive after a year of trying.

For couples who have been trying to conceive for more than 3 years without any success the likelihood is then reduced to 1 in 4 or less.

It is not always possible to identify the cause of infertility and fertility problems as there are many.

Various treatments and options are available, and these will depend on what is causing the problem. While you may feel that talking to your GP is embarrassing or you don’t feel comfortable doing it, it is best to be as open and honest as you can. It is also beneficial for both partners to attend the appointments as infertility can affect either partner.

Your GP will be able to do an initial assessment and then discuss your options with you for what to do next.

Some treatments may be available from your local Integrated Care Board (ICB) and your GP may be able to advise you of this, unfortunately fertility treatment isn’t available on the NHS is all areas.

Treatments are also available privately, but it can be costly and there are no guarantees.

If you are considering private treatment, you should choose your private clinic carefully your GP may be able to give you advice or recommend a hospital/clinic.

You should make sure that you choose a clinic that's licensed by the Human Fertilisation and Embryo Authority (HFEA)
